3 Biopsies-no cancer

by: Charles on Mon, Nov 26 2007

1 1/2 years ago my PSA had gone from my usual 2 to 5. I was sent to a urologist After taking antibiotics to rule out infection and my PSA up to 5.5 he suggested a biopsy. He did the usual 12 section biopsy. 11 sections were negative and one was suspicious. 3 months later (PSA now 6) he did another biopsy taking samples only from the suspicious area. Negative.
But, my PSA continued to go up for the next year. The next step I was told was a 32 sample biopsy under anesthesia They actually take 2-5 samples from 16 sections. I was thrilled yesterday that all samples were completely benign and my PSA is up to 9.5. I never cry but I cried when I got that great news.
So we are just going to treat it as BPH I do take a testosterone supplement.
All DREs are simply enlarged prostate no nodules or hard areas.
Right now I have a catheter in as I have not resumed peeing since the biopsy 5 days ago-not unusual with that much trauma. I get it out next Monday and hopefully the plumbing works.
I started on Flomax yesterday to try and help that along. I don’t know if I will need Flomax long term or just the next couple of weeks to get back to normal.
